Asbury Park Press: What is athleisure?

An athleisure boutique is opening in Spring Lake – but what is athleisure, a type of clothing that has seen an steep incline on Google Trends since this time last year?

Alison Keating, 27, of the Normandy Beach section of Toms River, said it’s a style of clothing that looks like athletic wear and can be worn during non-athletic, leisurely activities.

“I feel it’s a style women have worn for years, and someone just decided to put a label on it,” Keating said.

Keating decided to open an athleisure boutique on Third Avenue in Spring Lake after her own professional career became a hybrid of experiences, much like the style of clothes in her boutique.

Barefoot is Keating’s first foray into entrepreneurship. Previously, she worked in retail and managed yoga studios.

“I have wanted to own my own business, I think, since I started working over 10 years ago,” she said. “I’m tying all of my experiences together.”

Spring Lake is the perfect place for Barefoot, Keating said, because there’s a strong support for local businesses. A ribbon-cutting is scheduled for her store at 11:30 a.m. April 4.

The boutique carries clothes that intersect at “active and lifestyle,” and yoga and Pilates gear.
